Funding

Maryland Sea Grant issues biennial requests for research proposals about the Chesapeake Bay watershed and Maryland’s coastal bays. Our grants are available to teams led by scientists from Maryland and the District of Columbia.

We also administer numerous grant and fellowship opportunities throughout the year. We are dedicated to supporting local researchers and students working on research related to our priorities and strategic goals.

• Funding opportunities: Learn details about open and expired funding opportunities. Access our proposal forms and online worksheets.
• Program Development funds: In addition to our core and pass-through funding opportunities, Maryland Sea Grant also supports small, targeted grants, to help support new projects and studies in emerging areas of science.
• Share your research: We require all researchers seeking funding to consider how their research efforts will be disseminated beyond academia and translated to appropriate audiences -- like managers, legislators, students, and the general public. The agents and specialists at Maryland Sea Grant Extension are an excellent resource for making these connections and providing guidance on how to develop an effective outreach plan.
• Data management: All researchers we fund are also required to create a plan for making data collected during the project available to the public.  
• Research fellows: Maryland Sea Grant Research Fellowships are awarded to graduate students whose research is linked to a Maryland Sea Grant-funded project through an already awarded grant.
