Since 1997, Maryland Sea Grant has partnered with the University of Gothenburg on the Virtual University Education (VIRTUE) Project to spread awareness of marine biodiversity. The VIRTUE Project led to the development of these Biofilms and Biodiversity resources. Over the years, project leaders have submerged biofilm discs in marine and freshwater environments around the world. Students have studied the biofilms and observed organisms ranging from microbes to macroinvertebrates.
This gallery shows some of the biofilm discs that have been collected and studied across the United States and internationally.
