Michael Kalinowski

Michael Kalinowski is a PhD student at the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science's Horn Point Laboratory. This chapter of his dissertation focuses on comparing nutrient, microbial, and viral samples of oyster larvae tank water to help determine why unexpected oyster larvae die-offs occur at the Horn Point Laboratory Oyster Hatchery. His hope is that this research can reduce oyster larvae production slowdowns and continue supplying billions of oyster larvae to oyster aquaculture and restoration sites across Maryland.

Additional projects for his PhD include how nitrogen, iron, sulfur, and methane cycling microbes influence Chesapeake Bay sediments along the Bay's main channel. He also explores how oyster aquaculture can impact sediments. Before graduate school, Kalinowski received a bachelor of science in industrial and operations engineering from the University of Michigan. He then worked for a few years at Boeing in Washington state as an industrial engineer on the 777 airplane program. In his free time, he enjoys running, hiking, and skiing.
