Science Illustration Internship

This internship offers experience in scientific illustration and communication of topics in the coastal and marine sciences. Maryland Sea Grant first hosted this internship in 2025, thanks to funding from the Maxwell/Hanrahan Foundation. This intern collaborates with researchers and subject matter experts at Maryland Sea Grant and the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science to illustrate a variety of complex scientific topics. The intern will have opportunities to engage in science translation, work with writers to pair illustrations with written copy, and collaborate with scientists working on Chesapeake Bay and coastal issues in Maryland alongside an experienced team of science communicators.

The 2025 intern produced illustrations about aquaculture education, biofilm communities, living shorelines, Bay microbes, and more. Read more about the illustrator’s work
