Sylvia Jacobson

Sylvia Jacobson is a master’s student at the University of Maryland, College Park in the Environmental Science and Technology department. She works with advisor, Dr. Andrew Baldwin, as well as researchers from the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center, including Dr. Dennis Whigham and Dr. Melissa McCormick, to investigate native plant restoration in tidal wetlands dominated by the invasive plant Phragmites australis (common reed). Her research explores the potential of different native wetland plant species to grow, stabilize the marsh, and store carbon following the removal of the invasive Phragmites.

She graduated with a B.S.E. in Environmental Engineering from Princeton University and worked on the remediation of contaminated waterways for two years as an environmental scientist with Anchor QEA. In her free time, she enjoys hiking, playing music, and reading.
