Purpose:

The Capacity Building Initiative, a program of the Chesapeake Bay Trust and the Chesapeake Bay Funders Network, aims to increase the effectiveness of organizations with missions that focus on natural resources and whose strategic plans contain elements that seek to advance the restoration and protection of the Chesapeake, Coastal Bays, and Youghiogheny watersheds. Through this opportunity, grants will be provided to eligible organizations to support their ability to accomplish their missions.

This program aims to increase the effectiveness of organizations that protect and restore rivers and the watershed by addressing organizational capacity needs.

Eligibility:

501(c)(3) Non-profit organizations throughout the Chesapeake watershed including MD, DE, DC, PA, VA, Washington DC, and WV; with a particular focus in the state of Maryland.

Exploring the Use of Benthic Microbial Fuel Cells to Remove Sulfide While Harvesting Energy from Oyster Aquaculture Biodeposits

Oyster aquaculture is a rapidly growing industry in Maryland’s Chesapeake waters which stimulates economic activity and may provide a host of ecosystem benefits. A potential concern associated with the intensification of the oyster aquaculture is the local production and accumulation of oyster biodeposits, which can lead to a porewater sulfide accumulation and declining bioturbation, symptoms of declining ecosystem function. Sulfide is naturally removed from the seafloor by the interactions between bioturbating infauna and sulfide oxidizing bacteria.
