Abstract:

This article describes ongoing anthropological study of Chesapeake Bay fisheries. In particular, this article focuses on the blue crab and oyster fisheries. Two approaches to cultural analysis—cultural models and cultural consensus—are described in terms of their application to these fisheries. The discussion summarizes each approach and provides brief examples of results each approach can produce. The article concludes with a few thoughts on the utility of this combined approach to cultural analysis for research on and management of Chesapeake Bay fisheries.
