2017 Sea Grant Aquaculture Initiative: Call for Proposals

The National Sea Grant Office welcomes proposals for two competitive opportunities through the 2017 Sea Grant Aquaculture Initiative to advance aquaculture research, address barriers to aquaculture, and expand aquaculture production. Up to $15 million is expected to be available over several years to support projects in the two competitions. Interested parties must partner with Maryland Sea Grant to apply.

The first competition, “Addressing Impediments to Aquaculture Opportunities,” is focused on projects that show great promise to increase aquaculture production in the near future by clearly addressing major constraints, barriers, or hurdles limiting marine, coastal, and Great Lakes aquaculture production in the United States.

The second competition, “Integrated Projects to Increase Aquaculture Production,” is focused on projects that may be earlier in the exploratory/development phase that show promise to contribute to the expansion of sustainable marine, coastal, and Great Lakes aquaculture in the United States.

Please note that each proposal must fully address each of the program objectives (see page 2-3 in each FFO description) and Maryland Sea Grant must be a fully integrated partner.

NOAA Sea Grant 2017 Aquaculture Initiative: Addressing Impediments to Aquaculture Opportunities.

Short Description due to Maryland Sea Grant by 5 pm EST March 9, 2017

Final proposals due to Maryland Sea Grant by 5 pm EST April 11, 2017 (for submission to NOAA by 4/18/17)

For the “Addressing Impediments” competition only, Maryland Sea Grant is allowed to submit a maximum of three proposals to NOAA. Therefore, MDSG requires investigators interested in submitting a proposal to this competition to send a short description (1-2 paragraphs) of each proposal idea directly to Maryland Sea Grant (research@mdsg.umd.edu) by 5 pm on March 9.  MDSG will assemble a small panel of experts who will use the proposal review criteria in the FFO to help us create a short list of three proposals. We plan to provide feedback to PIs by March 16 as to whether their proposal will be one of three put forward to NOAA. The PIs must then develop the full proposal and submit it to Maryland Sea Grant by April 11, 2017.
