2016 Knauss Fellowships Awards and Schedule
Award Total: $56,500
- $45,000 for your stipend and living expenses (per diem)
- $9,000 to cover mandatory health benefits, fringe, and moving expenses
- Up to $2,500 for placement week
- Any remaining funds beyond the $45,000 shall be used during the fellowship year, first to satisfy academic degree-related activities (e.g. tuition) and second for fellowship-related activities.

| 13 February 2015 | Applications, as complete PDFs, due to Maryland Sea Grant |
| March 2015 | Candidate interviews at Maryland Sea Grant; finalists selected |
| March 2015 | Maryland Sea Grant submits up to six finalist application packets to National Sea Grant program for their final selection |
| June 2015 | Selection process and subsequent notification to Sea Grant programs of selected finalists completed. |
| October 2015 | Meet with Maryland Sea Grant to discuss upcoming fellowship before placement week |
| December 2015 | Placement week in Washington, D.C. |
| December 2015 | Meet with Maryland Sea Grant to complete paperwork |
| 10 January 2016 | Submit photo and biographical sketch to Maryland Sea Grant |

Exploring the Use of Benthic Microbial Fuel Cells to Remove Sulfide While Harvesting Energy from Oyster Aquaculture Biodeposits
Oyster aquaculture is a rapidly growing industry in Maryland’s Chesapeake waters which stimulates economic activity and may provide a host of ecosystem benefits. A potential concern associated with the intensification of the oyster aquaculture is the local production and accumulation of oyster biodeposits, which can lead to a porewater sulfide accumulation and declining bioturbation, symptoms of declining ecosystem function. Sulfide is naturally removed from the seafloor by the interactions between bioturbating infauna and sulfide oxidizing bacteria.
