Oyster Evaluation

Instructional Level: High School

Driving Question(s):

How do environmental, ecosystem and anthrogenic impacts influence or interact with the anatomical structures and functions of the eastern oyster and related conservation and restoration efforts of this keystone species?

Evaluation

What we read and see in multi-media resources should be analyzed through the process of claim, evidence and reasoning to best conclude what is scientifically accurate.

In this activity students will be asked to take what they have learned from the Maryland Sea Grant Eastern Oyster Education resource and apply those concepts to analyze multi-media resources made for public consumption.

Objectives

Students will:

  1. Work in small groups to compare observations and recount how an online video about oysters reflects what was learned from the Maryland Sea Grant Eastern Oyster Education resource.

Lesson Materials

Computer Access

Procedures

Explore

  1. Have students watch the 10 min video from the Chesapeake Bay Foundation entitled The Incredible Oyster Reef.

Evaluate

  1. Have students work in small group to compare observations and recount how the video reflects what was learned from the anatomy labs, particulate matters lab and hunting for hemocytes lab. Each group should generate a list of evidence from the video that supports or refutes what was learned in these activities.
  2. Come together as a class and create a master list for class discussion.

Extension

  1. Have students find other online multi-media resources about oysters and apply the same methods to develop critical thinking skills.
