Questions:
  1. Did the student have enough coursework for the project he or she worked on?

  2. Did your student develop a research project with you or did you set out a specific project for the student to follow?

  3. Did the student achieve, exceed or not meet the expectations you expected?

  4. Did the student demonstrate initiative in approaching his or her research?

  5. Did the student have a basic understanding of issues related to Chesapeake Bay?

  6. Could the orientation program, which includes a research cruise on the Patuxent, prepare students more satisfactorily? For example, with regard to instrumentation, introduction to Bay science or other topics.

  7. Are there ways that Maryland Sea Grant could have better helped prepare students for mid-summer and final presentations? With the final paper?

  8. The goal of the REU program is to give students the chance to conduct research in a way that gives them a glimpse into the life of a graduate student and into working in a marine lab. Is this a realistic presumption? If so, do you feel that your student had that opportunity?

  9. In the event that Maryland Sea Grant has funding available to help partially support a student presentation at a national meeting, do you think the quality of work of your student presentable as a presentation or poster at any upcoming meetings this fall or next spring?

  10. The REU research ethics roundtable was a new mentor-REU activity. If you were able to attend please provide comments and suggestions on the event.

  11. We will have the opportunity to recommend one REU student to do a poster at the 2010 Ocean Sciences meeting in Portland Oregon in February (all expenses paid through a grant to the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee). Would you nominate the work your student did? Further, we may have additional money to support students at this meeting or another. Please let us know if this is a possibility for your REU student and if not this meeting what meeting would be of interest.
