Comparison of Dentrification and Photosynthesis Rates Between Restored and "Natural" Marshes
Maureen Caupp, Frostburg State University
Summer 2008
Rates of denitrification and photosynthesis were measured in cores taken from Horn Point marsh, on the Choptank River and from Poplar Island, in the Chesapeake Bay. Denitrification was observed in all cores, causing an increase in the N2 gas concentration measured in the water samples. Rates of photosynthesis were dependant on light conditions and the amount of photosynthetic algae and bacteria present.
