Organism in Northeastern United States OystersIn trying to determine the identity of the juvenile oyster disease (JOD), researchers have largely eliminated a dinoflagellate or a bacterium as the primary disease agent. Suspecting the infective organism to be a ciliated protist, which is known to parasitize oysters and other invertebrates by first invading the mantle epithelium, Eugene Small is working to culture and identify the protist, and to test its infectivity in oysters. |
