Hormonal Regulation of the Onset of Puberty in Striped BassA major limit to finfish aquaculture is the expense of maintaining adults to reproductive maturity, a period of six to eight years. One way to reduce this expense is to lower the age of sexual maturity, which could reduce long-term handling costs and allow earlier reproduction. Yonathan Zohar's hypothesis is that the onset of sexual maturity is triggered by the development of a functional gonadotropin-regulating hormone. Focusing his studies at the molecular level, his aim in this project is to follow the course of the hormone's development and to determine how its activity is regulated. |
