General Software and Databases
- Environmental Data and
Information Management System - A service of the Gulf of
Maine Council on the Marine Environment, this site is a directory of databases related to
the Gulf of Maine marine environment.
- Massachusetts Bay Information
Server - Designed to facilitate the
flow of information from scientists, government agencies, and environmental organizations
to the public interested in learning more about the coast and the Massachusetts Bay
ecosystem. The site serves primarily as a clearinghouse for data and information,
directing users to agencies and other contacts, specific research projects, geographic
information and sources of data.
Ag/Soils
- State Natural Resource Conservation Service/National
Resources Inventory Programs:
Air
Biodiversity
- Connecticut
Natural Diversity Database - The central repository for information on the biology,
population status and threats to the elements of natural diversity in the state of
Connecticut. Information on rare plant and animal species and significant natural
communities is compiled, stored and made available through the Data Base.
Chemicals/Toxics
Contaminated Sediments
- Contaminated Sediments
Database for the Gulf of Maine - The overall objective of this project is to create a
database of existing data on contaminants in sediment for the Gulf of Maine region that
will be useful to persons throughout the region for scientific and management purposes.
This is a collaborative effort that involves PIs from the U.S.G.S., WHOI,
UMASS, UNH, Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences and active participation from the
USACOE-NED, EPA, NOAA, and other agencies.
Economy and Environment
Fish
- NOAA/Northeast Fisheries
Science Center:
- Status of Fishery
Resources off the Northeastern United States - This report summarizes the status of
selected finfish and shellfish resources off the northeastern coast of the United States
from
Cape Hatteras to Nova Scotia based on information available through Spring of 1998.
- Northeast
Region Marine Recreational Economics Survey - Two sportfishing surveys were conducted
during 1994 in the Northeast Region (Maine to Virginia). Data from the surveys provided
demographic and economic information on marine recreational fishing participants from
Maine to Virginia. The purpose of this report is to document the socio-economic
characteristics of these participants and to identify their marine recreational fishing
preferences and their perceptions of current and prospective fishery management
regulations. This information will be used to estimate statistical models of the demand
for marine recreational fishing for eight important recreational species in a subsequent
phase of the research.
Forestry
- Yale Forest Forum - Its
mission is to understand, promote and support the sustainable management of private
forestlands. It was formed in 1994 and was established as a formal program of Yale
University's School of Forestry and Environmental Studies in 1997.
GIS/Land Use Mapping
- Maine GAP Analysis Program -
Its mission is to provide regional assessments of the
conservation status of vertebrate species and to facilitate the application of this
information to land management activities. There are
three primary layers of
information used in Gap Analyses: habitat mapping, animal information, and
conservation lands.
Nonindigenous Species
- America's Least
Wanted - The Massachusetts Chapter of The Nature Conservancy has prepared this
informational site about the threat of alien species in that state.
- Marine
Bioinvaders Site - These pages provide
information on marine and freshwater bioinvaders, geographic
distributions of exotic marine species, related research activities, fact sheets and regulations and policies on introduced species.
Physical Attributes
Water
- NAWQA Study Units:
- Connecticut,
Housatonic, and Thames River Basin study unit - Extends from the Canadian border to
coastal Connecticut. The boundaries of the study unit are defined by the drainage divides
of the Housatonic and Connecticut River basins on the west and the Thames and Connecticut
River basins on the east. The study unit includes eastern Vermont, western New Hampshire,
west-central Massachusetts, nearly all of Connecticut, and small parts of New York and
Rhode Island, an area of about 15,750 square miles.
- New England
Coastal Basins study unit - Includes many important New
England rivers, and represents a mixture of urban and industrial areas, rapidly urbanizing
areas, and large forested areas. Major rivers and their watersheds include the Kennebec,
the Androscoggin, the Saco, the Merrimack, the Charles, and the Blackstone Rivers.
Wetlands
Social and Legal
- Marine Law
Institute - The research and public service component of the Ocean and Coastal Law
Program at the University of Maine School of Law and is the only law school-affiliated
marine policy research program in the Northeast. MLI has dedicated its program of legal
and policy research to the analysis of ocean and coastal resource issues for the express
purpose of improving management practices and public understanding.
Major Research Centers
- Bedford
Institute of Oceanography - Canada Department of Fisheries and Oceans' east
coast laboratory for physical oceanography, environmental and fisheries studies.
- Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean
Sciences - A private, non-profit research institution in Boothbay Harbor, Maine. Its
mission is to learn, to understand, to educate, and to promote stewardship of our oceans.
- Marine Sciences Research Center
at the State University of New York at Stony Brook - The center for research, graduate
education, and public service in the marine sciences for the entire State University of
New York system. Emphasis in the research, educational, and public service programs
is on the coastal ocean.
- Stellwagen Bank Information System -
Approximately ten kilometers north of the tip of Cape Cod, lies Stellwagen Bank; a
shallow, submarine platform formed by receeding glaciers about 18,000 years ago. There has
been much attention turned to Stellwagen Bank in the last few years since it was declared
a National Marine Sanctuary by NOAA in June, 1993. Commercial fishing is the most
economically important activity on the bank, though whale-watching has grown steadily
since 1976 due to the regional access and concentration of cetacean species.
Recreational activities, tourism, research, and commercial shipping are other important
human uses.
- Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) - A
private, independent, not-for-profit corporation dedicated to research and higher
education at the frontiers of ocean science. Its primary mission is to develop and
effectively communicate a fundamental understanding of the processes and characteristics
governing how the oceans function and how they interact with the Earth as a whole.
