Outreach & Extension: General Public
Contacts: Adam Frederick, Jackie Takacs
The Sea Grant Extension Program's Education Focus Team works to ensure that environmental education reaches well beyond the walls of traditional learning environments by providing programs for Maryland citizens of all ages. Under the leadership of education specialist Jacqueline Takacs, stationed at the Education and Outreach Program of the UMCES Chesapeake Biological Laboratory (CBL) in Solomons, Maryland, Sea Grant Extension is especially well-equipped to relay information about current research to a variety of audiences.
Chesapeake Biological Laboratory Visitor Center
Manned by over 40 docents, the UMCES Chesapeake Biological Laboratory welcomes over 3400 visitors annually to experience the scientific atmosphere of the bayside University of Maryland campus, and to take with them a better understanding of the role CBL and Sea Grant play in protecting the Chesapeake Bay through graphical displays, interactive computers, and videos.
Public Seminars Program
Seminars and other education events
are hosted throughout the year to engage the local public and the
scientific community in conversation and instruction. A minimum of 10
seminars/events are held annually. Recent seminar topics include:
"Nitrogen and Phosphorus in Chesapeake Bay: The Good, The Bad and the
Really Ugly," and "Restoring the Chesapeake Bay's Rivers and Streams."
Savor the Bay: Science and Seafood Seminar Series
Savor the Bay is a unique outreach program to engage and educate the public about current Chesapeake Bay research and restoration efforts by targeting their stomachs. In cooperation with local restaurateurs, participants feed their bodies and minds as they indulge in a delicious Bay seafood meal prepared by local chefs while listening to scientists from the UMCES Chesapeake Biological Laboratory and Maryland Sea Grant present their Chesapeake-related work.Click here for more information on the 2007 series dinner speakers and menus.
