Outreach & Extension: Marine Science Education
"In the end we will conserve only what we love. We will love only what we understand; and we will understand only what we are taught."
— Senegalese poet Baba Dioum
To be good stewards of the environment, we must first understand it. Maryland Sea Grant Extension's Marine Education Focus Team promotes environmental understanding by connecting students, educators, and the general public with current research and methods for studying the Chesapeake and its resources.
Environmental science has increasingly become a focus of science education in Maryland. At the university level, scientists perform diverse and innovative research to learn more about the Bay and how to protect it. A primary challenge is the translation of this research into an understandable, practical, and applied resource for classroom teachers and students. As a well-connected and respected source of environmental information and resources, the Maryland Sea Grant Extension Program (SGEP) works to meet this challenge head-on. Through its Aquaculture-in-Action Program, teacher training, and educational programs for the general public, Sea Grant's Education Team actively applies current research in the classroom and beyond.
