Pfiesteria and the Seafood Industry
The extensive media coverage of Pfiesteria piscicida on the Pocomoke River in 1997 and its relation to fish kills as well as its uncertain human health impacts, affected the seafood industry in the Chesapeake Bay. A study by Doug Lipton in cooperation with the Maryland Department of Agriculture analyzed the economic impacts on seafood sales and the tourism industry.
