Outreach & Extension: Aquatic Plants
Contact: Dan Terlizzi
The growth of aquatic plants for home water gardens and environmental restoration is a significant part of Maryland’s aquaculture industry. Water gardens and restoration often go hand in hand as many species cultured for water gardens can be useful for restoring aquatic habitats and reducing excess nutrients in the water.
The Aquaculture & Coastal Restoration Focus Team concentrates on the development and application of strategies for aquatic plant nutrient management. Through workshops, they educate natural resource agencies, pond and housing development contractors, and pond owners about the benefits of aquatic plants in reducing nutrient discharges. The Team provides tips on species selection and planting that will result in reduced nitrogen and phosphorus discharges from stormwater ponds. Additionally, they work with nurseries and garden shops on water garden design, water quality, fish health, and aquatic plant selection and care.
