In this exciting immersion program, teacher fellows learn about Chesapeake research from its headwaters to the Bay in an introductory weeklong workshop. For the rest of the summer, they will reside at one of four University of Maryland premier research facilities working alongside scientists on projects that include wetland restoration, oyster and fish aquaculture, nutrient dynamics, and marine pollution. They will also create a student lesson that builds on their research experience. Teacher fellows will refine these lessons during the academic year, testing them with students and sharing them with colleagues at the 2006 Maryland Association for Environmental and Outdoor Educators conference. Teacher fellows will gain improved teachers' scientific inquiry skills and knowledge of Chesapeake Bay watershed science, as well as receive a stipend, classroom supplies, and some travel expenses.
