SciTech Education Program
Launches New Web Site

www.umbi.umd.edu/~scitech

The University of Maryland Biotechnology Institute's SciTech Education Program in partnership with the Maryland Sea Grant Program launched a new website that gives comprehensive information about the program and pre-visit materials for each of the labs offered in the State-of the-Art education laboratories located within the students examining organisms with dissecting microscopes at SciTech Columbus Center in the Baltimore Inner Harbor. Check out the new website and call 410-576-5778 for more information on booking a trip to the lab to gain "hands-on" experience with:

Biofilms and Biodiversity
Zebrafish Embryology
Natural Products and Biosensors
DNA Extraction and Gel Electrophoresis
Oil Pollution and Bioremediation
Plankton in the Bay
Oyster Biology and Ecology

Additionally, there are two new labs:

  • Elementary Grade 3-5 program entitled "Looking at Chesapeake Bay" that gives young scientists the opportunity to discover and explore various organisms native and non-native to Chesapeake Bay and learn valuable microscope skills.

  • PCR techniques lab for advance HS students to perform PCR and learn the "mechanics" behind the reactions required to make millions of copies of a segment of genetic material.
