"Up Close"

Andi Keuhne
Hollywood Elementary
St. Mary's County

Degree: Master's degree from University of Georgia; Bachelor's degree from Virginia Tech.

Experience: 6 years at Greenview Knolls Elementary school and 9 years at Hollywood Elementary school, both in St. Mary's county, Maryland

Subjects: 1st - 3rd grade.

"Most Memorable" Teaching Experience: "Arriving around 8:45am at Point Lookout Marina for transport across the Bay only to be told that our overnight had to be postponed due to unsafe travel conditions on the water. While students took notes on the a Smith Island video back at school, teachers and parents scrambled to put together several centers for the day: Sketched observational drawings of real crabs and oysters then labeled parts using diagrams; Studied fish anatomy then made fish print t-shirts; and Baked our own version of a Smith Island ten-layer cake. We later took our sleeping bags outside, crawled in and listened to tales of childhood from the adult chaperones. What a day! While our two-day trip was rescheduled for the spring, some students insist they had a three day hands-on study of Smith Island."

Andi is experimenting with a new program at her school. She is offering monthly afterschool family workshops where adult and child family members learn about different topics in their local environment together.

Favorite Class Trip: Chesapeake Bay Foundation overnight to Smith Island - 3rd graders learning about the ecology, culture, and economics of the island.

Awards and Grants: In the spring of 2001, students wrote and received at grant from the Chesapeake Bay Trust for an erosion control/habitat restoration planting project.

Teaching Techniques: "I try to integrate environmental/outdoor studies with other content area curriculum requirements."

Future Plans: "Focus on one project at a time!"
