WETLAND SUMMER COURSES FOR EDUCATORS
with Environmental Concern Inc.

It's time to start making those summer plans! Summer courses are again available for educators through Environmental Concern Inc., The Wetland Group, a nonprofit organization with twenty-nine years of experience in wetlands. Courses are held in St. Michaels, Maryland, on the beautiful Eastern Shore. Maryland Continuing Professional Development Experience credits are available for most courses. Here are a few selections...

Wetland Horticulture on June 21st is designed for educators interested in developing a school plant nursery. Participants are introduced to basic horticultural practices and the propagation of herbaceous and woody wetland plants. Many aspects of

POW! The Planning of Wetlands is offered June 25-27 in Laurel and again August 13-15 in St. Michaels. One credit is available. If you are planning a wetland for use as an outdoor study area or seeking recognition in the Maryland Green Schools program, this course will help you achieve those goals. POW! is designed to guide educators in the construction, restoration, enhancement, and monitoring of wetlands in or near schoolyards using natural and/or artificial water sources. Participants will receive a copy of the newly published book, POW! The Planning of Wetlands, which contains hands-on activities in lesson plan format for use with students.

Founded in 1972, Environmental Concern Inc. is a non-profit, non-advocacy corporation located in St. Michaels, Maryland. Under the guidance of Dr. Edgar Garbisch, President and founder of the company, Environmental Concern has become a leader in developing solutions to wetland issues. Environmental Concern is a very diverse company that offers many different services through our various departments.

The Education Department provides training for educators and wetland professionals locally and nationally. WOW!: The Wonders of Wetlands training has been available nationally since 1991, and our newest program POW!: The Planning of Wetlands has been well received in Maryland, Virginia, and Kentucky.

WOW! The Wonders of Wetlands on July 11th features hands-on multidisciplinary activities from the nationally recognized book WOW! The Wonders of Wetlands. Educators experience creative and informative indoor and outdoor activities with soil, water, and plants, as well as the ecological functions and values of wetlands. Participants will receive a copy of the newest version of WOW! which contains updates and correlations with the National Science Education Standards.

In Wetland Creatures on July 12-13 educators will practice wetland bird identification, seine for fish and crustaceans, search for herptiles, and identify tracks of wetland creatures. This course is entirely, hands-on, outdoors, wet, and dirty-so be prepared!

Wetland Ecology on August 8-9 is designed for science teachers and environmental educators wishing to increase their understanding of wetland ecology. Half the course is fieldwork, thus allowing participants to fully experience wetlands.
