Summer Courses for Teachers

Microbe for Hire Workshop
July 23-27, 2001

This summer, 15 Maryland middle and high school science teachers will be able to participate in the Microbes for Hire Workshop at the Center of Marine Biotechnology (COMB). The Microbes for Hire Workshop is designed to translate the applied microbial research at COMB into laboratory activities for teachers and students in Maryland. Here are some topics to be explored:

  • Bioremediation and the Effectiveness of biosurfactants
  • Bioluminescence and the Application of Biosensors
  • Bacterial Biofilms and Their Relationship to biodiversity
  • The Science of Winogradsky Columns and Marine "Microbial" Sediment
  • Biofilms in Biological Filtration for the Aquarium
  • Digital Imaging and Microscopy in the Classroom, The QX3 by Intel

Emphasis: Environmental, Marine and Biotechnology
Audience: Middle School & High School Educators
Credits: 2 MSDE available

Historical Ecology of the Chesapeake Bay
July 9-13 & 16-20, 2001

The Historical Ecology of the Chesapeake Bay is a "hands-on" field course that brings together the field of environmental science, marine ecology, history, and archaeology. Activities will include: lectures from leading researchers, participation in a research cruise, laboratory work with different Bay species, examination of historical and native archaeological sites, participation in restoration activities, and more.

Emphasis: Environmental, Marine and Social Sciences
Audience: K-12 Educators
Credits: 2 Graduate or 2 MSDE available
Accommodations: Provided if needed
