Program Highlights

Explore the geological history of Chesapeake Bay while aboard the R.V. Aquarius and learn about the historical oyster fishery with the Calvert Marine Museum;

. . . participate in a research cruise aboard the R.V. Aquarius and be introduced to environmental chemistry and fisheries science and management at the Chesapeake Biological Laboratory, University of Maryland Center for Environ- mental Science;

. . . examine pollen cores, floral samples, animal remains, historical maps, aerial photographs and other evidence to assess historical environmental changes at Historic St. Mary's City;

. . . become acquainted with the use of biological indicators for monitoring water quality while aboard a skipjack with St. Mary's College of Maryland;

. . . examine historic landscapes and work an archaeological site at Jefferson Patterson Park and Museum of the Maryland Historical Trust;

. . . study the biology of the oyster and blue crab at The Academy of Natural Sciences Estuarine Research Center;

. . . be an active participant in oyster restoration activities at the Department of Natural Resources, Piney Point Oyster Nursery. . .

. . and that's just a taste of the program!

WHAT:

  

An 11-day hands-on workshop

WHEN:

  

June 21-23, June 26-30, & July 5-7, 2000.

TIME:

  

9am - 4pm each day.

WHO:

  

Secondary (7-12) public and private school educators
(K-6 on a "space available" basis).

FEE:

  

NONE (unless applying for graduate credit).

Requirements

Educators will be required to:

  • Keep a journal throughout the workshop.

  • Prepare a lesson/activity integrating course materials/concepts for application in the classroom.

  • Present their lesson/activity to all participants at a final session to be held one Saturday in the fall of 2000.

Support

Workshop participants will be chosen competitively from among applicants who submit materials requested on the application form. Participants will receive:

  • Integration of all workshop themes to MSDE Core Learning Goals and Learning Outcomes.

  • Materials, Supplies and Teaching Media needed to replicate various lab activities in the classroom.

  • Videos and other Bay related references.

  • Accommodations for those requiring overnight housing.

  • 2 Graduate or MSDE Credits.
