Research Experiences for Undergraduates

The Maryland Sea Grant Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program offers thirteen students the opportunity to conduct marine research on the Chesapeake Bay. The program is especially designed for students majoring in such fields as biology, chemistry, ecology, physics, engineering, mathematics, and marine and environmental science.

For Graduate Students:

Maryland Sea Grant Fellows

Maryland Sea Grant invites researchers who have already received notice of a pending funding award from the program to apply for a graduate student Research Fellow. Research Fellowships are awarded to graduate students whose research is linked to a Maryland Sea Grant funded project through a grant from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). The program provides full academic support for up to four years and the opportunity to conduct research alongside an established marine scientist. Consistent with Maryland Sea Grant's mission to integrate research, outreach and education, Fellows participate in several Sea Grant supported programs aimed at further developing their communication and writing skills.

Policy Fellowships

For Graduate Students:

Dean John A. Knauss Marine Policy Fellowships

National Sea Grant College Program

Maryland Sea Grant seeks applicants for these 2009 fellowships, funded by the National Sea Grant office and administered through individual state Sea Grant programs. Knauss Fellows spend a year in marine policy-related positions in the legislative and executive branches of the federal government. Past Fellows have worked in the offices of U.S. Senators and Representatives, on Congressional subcommittees, and at agencies such as the National Science Foundation and NOAA. The fellowship runs from February 1, 2009 to January 31, 2010 and pay a stipend of $33,000 plus $7,000 for health insurance, moving, and travel.

Coastal Management Fellowships

NOAA Coastal Services Center

These two-year fellowships, currently available for 2008-10, were established in 1996 to provide on-the-job education and training opportunities in coastal resource management and policy for postgraduate students and to provide project assistance to state coastal zone management programs. The program matches postgraduate students with state coastal zone programs to work on projects proposed by the state and selected by the fellowship sponsor, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Coastal Services Center. Fellowships offer a competitive salary, medical benefits, and travel and relocation expense reimbursement.

Teacher Fellowship

Chesapeake Teacher Research Fellowship (CTRF)

Environmental Science Education Partnership (ESEP)

This fellowship immerses 6th-12th grade teachers in Chesapeake research to advance their scientific inquiry skills and understanding of regional ecological and environmental topics and issues. Teacher fellows spend the summer working with University scientists on a research project at one of our four Maryland laboratories: Appalachian Laboratory, Chesapeake Biological Laboratory, Horn Point Laboratory, Center of Marine Biotechnology.
