Instrumented Buoys

The transmittal of continuous data on biological and physical properties of the Chesapeake Bay system has become an important component of Bay-wide monitoring efforts. Developed by researchers at the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science, the Chesapeake Bay Observation System (CBOS) is a system of moored and instrumented buoys that transmit data in "real time." CBOS makes it possible for many users – scientists, resource managers, teachers, mariners — to access data on salinity, temperature, dissolved oxygen, currents, and meteorological varialbles for several sites in the Bay.
