Speaker Biography

Katherine Glassner-Shwayder
Great Lakes Commission

Katherine Glassner-Shwayder has served as an environmental policy analyst for the Great Lakes Commission since 1992 in the program area of Resource Management. Currently, her primary responsibility is management of the aquatic nuisance species project for the Commission, providing staff support to the Great Lakes Panel on Aquatic Nuisance Species. Over the past number of years, she has worked on policy development and information/education initiatives to advance regional coordination on ANS prevention and control. She serves as editor for the quarterly publication, ANS Update, a newsletter of the Great Lakes Panel and is currently working on recommendations in support of reauthorization of the National Invasive Species Act, U.S. federal legislation initially enacted in 1990 as the Aquatic Nuisance Species Prevention and Control Act. She also is beginning project work with the Great Lakes Panel on the development of a regional rapid response plan to address aquatic invasions. Glassner-Shwayder holds a master's degree in water resources management from the University of Wisconsin, Institute for Environmental Studies and a bachelor's degree in biology from Oberlin College.
